Personal Safety
Every year, thousands of individuals are injured from an assault and battery for a variety of reasons. One of the groups most susceptible to this victimization are college-aged students. It is important to take responsibility for your own safety. Many times, students become victims because they did not take precautions and have allowed themselves to be placed in dangerous situations.
Know the difference between assault and battery:
- An assault is a verbal threat to use force to injure another.
- A battery is an intentional and physical contact or striking without consent that involves some personal injury or offensive touching.
The following are some helpful tips that may deter or protect you from becoming a victim:
- Know your surroundings – do not go to areas that are unfamiliar to you if you are alone
- Be aware and alert of suspicious activity and REPORT it to police
- Never confront any situation or person
- Always give up property in lieu of being assaulted and battered (It's not worth it!)
- If confronted, attempt to escape and make as much noise as possible
- If you are a victim of assault and battery, seek medical attention and…
- REPORT and file a police report
